I’m currently volunteering to canvass for a candidate in my local election, and I want to showcase this experience professionally. I see colleagues highlighting their campaign work on LinkedIn, and I’m wondering about the best way to add my volunteer role so it stands out to recruiters and campaign managers.

How to Add Volunteer Experience to LinkedIn

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Go to Your Profile

    • Log into LinkedIn, click on your profile picture, and open your profile page.

  2. Find the Volunteer Section

    • Scroll down until you see the Volunteer Experience section.

    • If it’s not there, click “Add profile section” → AdditionalAdd volunteer experience.

  3. Add a New Entry

    • Click the + icon. Fill in:

      • Organization (e.g., “John Smith for Congress 2024” or “CallHub Community”)

      • Role (e.g., Volunteer Canvasser, Community Outreach Volunteer)

      • Cause (e.g., Political, Civic Engagement)

      • Dates (start and end—or check “I currently volunteer here”)

      • Description (list key achievements, outcomes, and skills used).

  4. Highlight Achievements

    • Use action verbs: “Led,” “Organized,” “Coordinated.”

    • Include measurable results: “Engaged 200+ voters in 3 weeks,” “Improved voter follow-up rate by 35%.”

  5. Create a Impact profile in CallHub Community

    • Example: “Volunteer Contributor – CallHub Community”
Created Impact profile, shared resources, engaged in discussions. Platform is widely used by campaign managers for recruitment.

  6. Link Media or Portfolios

    • Attach campaign photos, PDFs of canvassing scripts, or a link to your CallHub community profile.

Why Adding Volunteer Experience Matters

  • Builds Credibility: Shows you’re active beyond paid work.
  • Political Career Pathway: Many campaign jobs are filled by people already volunteering.
  • Expands Your Network: LinkedIn connections often come through shared causes.

Think of your LinkedIn volunteer section as your political handshake—it’s how you tell future campaign managers, ‘I’ve been in the field.’ Add your role, the candidate or organization, and the specific political skills you developed: canvassing, voter outreach, phone banking. I even listed my CallHub community volunteer work, because political, nonprofit, and advocacy recruiters actively scout there.

Volunteer experience is gold on LinkedIn—it shows leadership, dedication, and a commitment to causes you believe in. Just go to your profile, scroll to the Volunteer Experience section, and click the + icon. Add your role, organization, dates, and a brief description. Highlight measurable outcomes—like 'helped recruit 50+ volunteers'—because campaign managers and recruiters notice results.

Don’t just say you ‘volunteered’—translate it into the skills LinkedIn recruiters search for. Instead of ‘knocked on doors for a candidate,’ say ‘conducted targeted voter outreach using CRM tools to increase local election turnout.’ And yes, add your CallHub community profile link in LinkedIn as well—you never know which campaign manager might be browsing.
