As a parent, I want my teenager’s volunteer work to be acknowledged. I stumbled upon the PVSA online, but the rules seemed confusing. How does one actually apply and get certified?

How to Get the Presidential Volunteer Service Award
Step 1: Understand the Requirements
- The award is based on the number of volunteer hours within a 12-month period.
- Categories are broken down by age groups: Kids (5–10), Teens (11–15), Young Adults (16–25), Adults (26+).
- Each group has Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels depending on hours.
Step 2: Find a Certifying Organization
- You cannot self-apply.
- Only official organizations, schools, and nonprofits designated as “Certifying Organizations” can validate your hours.
- Use the official PVSA website directory to search for one near you.
Step 3: Track and Document Hours
- Keep a detailed log: date, hours served, nonprofit name, and supervisor contact.
- Some certifiers require signatures or letters from the nonprofit verifying your service.
Step 4: Submit for Verification
- Hand over your completed log to the certifying organization.
- They will review, verify, and submit the application on your behalf.
Step 5: Receive Recognition
- If approved, you’ll receive:
- A personalized certificate of achievement
- A medallion or pin (depending on level)
- A congratulatory letter from the President of the United States
Bonus Tip: Pairing the award with consistent service at one or two organizations not only makes tracking easier but also builds stronger references for college or career goals.
