Short version? It depends on what you do with it.

    1. The Degree Opens Doors—But You’ve Gotta Walk Through Them
Political science teaches you how to think critically, write clearly, and understand how systems work. Those are valuable skills. But employers want to see how you apply them. Just having the degree won’t guarantee you anything—you’ve got to back it up with experience.

    2. It’s a Crowded Field, So You Need to Stand Out
Lots of people graduate with similar degrees hoping to work in politics, government, or nonprofits. Internships, campaign work, or even local organizing can set you apart. If you’re already volunteering, you’re ahead of the game.

    3. There Are More Career Options Than You Might Think
You don’t have to work on Capitol Hill to use your degree. Political science majors end up in:

    • Local government roles

    • Advocacy and nonprofit jobs

    • Political campaigns and consulting

    • Journalism and public affairs

    • Grad school—like law, public policy, or even business

    4. How to Boost Your Chances

    • Intern early and often: Real-world experience matters.

    • Network smart: Go to events, talk to people, follow up.

    • Pick a focus: Whether it’s environmental policy or campaign strategy, having a niche can help you stand out.

    • Pair it with a skill: Data, comms, research—anything that shows you can do something beyond just knowing theory.

    5. Bottom Line No, it’s not impossible to find a job with a poli sci degree—but it’s not a golden ticket either. If you treat it like a starting point, stay involved, and keep learning, you’ll find your way. It just might take a little hustle.

I thought they were deductible at first! Like, if I support a cause, shouldn’t it count? But apparently, only donations to recognized charities are tax deductible — not political campaigns. It’s super confusing if you’re new to all this.

Honestly, most big companies play both sides to protect their interests, but from what I’ve seen, Home Depot’s leadership—especially their co-founder—has openly supported conservative candidates and Republican causes. That doesn’t necessarily mean the entire company backs one party, but money talks, you know?

Whether it’s a nonprofit or a 501(c)(3) doesn’t change what they do. I’m worried about the services they provide to young people. It’s a complex issue, and I wish there were more community-based alternatives.

February 28, 2025 at 8:13 am in reply to: Can I have an LLC and a nonprofit?

It’s about creating a sustainable model for change! An LLC can generate income to support your nonprofit’s mission. Think of it as a social enterprise. You can sell products or services through the LLC, and then use the profits to fund your nonprofit’s work. Imagine the possibilities! It’s about blending profit and purpose, and it can be done!

  • For non-profits, especially those focused on social justice, open-source solutions are the way to go! You avoid vendor lock-in and support community-driven development. Check out something like PostgreSQL—it’s powerful, scalable, and free. And, importantly, it allows for data sovereignty, which is crucial for protecting vulnerable communities. We need tools that empower us, not corporations.

Accessibility and ease of use are crucial for our organization. We work with volunteers who have varying levels of technical expertise. We opted for a website builder platform like Wix or Squarespace. They offer drag-and-drop interfaces, making it easy for anyone to update the site, even without coding knowledge. Plus, they often include hosting in their plans, simplifying things considerably. It does limit customization options, however.

It’s a tricky question legally and ethically. While you can donate, it’s crucial to follow all regulations and maintain transparency. Make sure your board is aware and approves, and document everything meticulously. You don’t want to jeopardise the nonprofit’s status or create any perception of self-dealing.

I love political films because they spark important conversations! These movies inspired me to get more involved:

    • Lincoln – A brilliant portrayal of leadership during one of America’s most crucial moments.

    • V for Vendetta – It’s a thrilling call for revolution against oppressive regimes.

    • Mr. Smith Goes to Washington – A classic, idealistic film that shows the fight against political corruption.

    • Milk – The inspiring story of Harvey Milk and his struggle for LGBT rights. For me, these movies show the power of individuals to bring change through politics, and they motivate me to work towards a better future.

Stopping political texts is easier than you might think! Just reply with the word ‘STOP’ to the text. Most campaigns are legally required to honor your request and will take you off their list. It’s super simple and helps keep your phone free of distractions!
