  • Looking for advice on how to start a nonprofit. Where should I begin?

I’ve always wanted to give back in a more structured way. After volunteering with a few local causes, I feel inspired to launch my own nonprofit—but I have no clue where to start. Any guidance would be amazing!

Start with Why – your mission has to be crystal clear. Then look into your state’s nonprofit laws, because incorporation comes before anything else. Once you’ve filed your Articles of Incorporation, apply for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. It’s a lot of paperwork, but if your purpose is strong, it’s worth it!

Create a simple checklist. First, outline your mission. Second, find a board of directors (you’ll need this to file). Third, register your nonprofit at the state level. Then file IRS Form 1023 or 1023-EZ to get tax-exempt status. Don’t skip budgeting or fundraising planning—you’ll need a roadmap to stay afloat.

Starting a nonprofit is about heart, but also about structure. Think of it like planting a tree: your mission is the seed, your paperwork is the roots, and your community is the sunlight. Find mentors who’ve done this before—they’ll help you avoid the overwhelm.

Starting a nonprofit is a beautiful mix of heart and hustle. Stay rooted in your mission, but don’t be afraid to ask for help along the way—nonprofit leaders love sharing what they’ve learned!
